Find Your Niche: How To Identify Your Own Slice Of The American Dream
by Yank Elliott, MBY & IAHBE Writer
The past two or three years have encompassed a time of trouble for America and the entire world. There are several tragic wars under way, along with worldwide terrorist (no longer a politically acceptable word) organizations, pirates disrupting sea traffic to a degree not seen since Sir Francis Drake, Captain Kidd, or Blackbeard, all of which constitute a catastrophic crisis for all of us. We live in constant fear for our personal safety, our 401ks are disappearing along with value in the stock market, the banks won’t help us buy houses or cars, and formerly cheap imported products are becoming out of reach for ordinary citizens because of skyrocketing maritime shipping costs. Crisis, upon crisis, upon more crises...

LapLink's PCmover®
by Elizabeth Cottrell, IAHBE Editor
PCmover® by Laplink (available in either a Home or a Professional version or from Dell in a package called PCmover® Essentials) is designed to provide the smooth movement/migration of all your programs, files, and settings from an old computer to a new computer so that they are fully functional when they get to the new computer. This may seem like a simple matter of hooking two computers together with a cable and transferring, or moving files from your old computer to an external drive and then copying them to your new computer, but it’s usually not that easy. That may work if your new computer is already loaded with all the software you need to run the files you plan to transfer, but if you’ve got software on your old computer that has not been purchased for your new computer, it won’t work just to copy your Program folder to your new computer. You are faced with having to find your original disks (or your original download files)—along with all the identification or user codes—and reinstall these all over again. PCmover® eliminates the need for this. The program is designed to work with Windows® and can move into either a Windows® XP or a Vista® PC...

Book Review |
| A mantra for the modern small business... |

reviewed by Yank Elliott, MBA & IAHBE Writer
The title of this book is interesting, but it tells nothing about what is really in the book. Many readers will recognize the events described, but how many realize what is behind them? Who organized these happenings and why did they do it? All of this is detailed by the authors in a surprisingly down-to-earth way easily understood by readers at all knowledge levels. The book ranks Number 19 among Amazon’s marketing books, so a lot of people think it is worth reading. I totally agree... |

Start-Up Opportunities In Hard Economic Times
by Elizabeth H. Cottrell, IAHBE Editor
If you have been dreaming and planning to start your own business, you may be tempted to put those dreams and plans aside in the wake of all the terrible economic news you’re hearing on television and radio. Wall Street seems to be imploding, banks are failing, unemployment is skyrocketing, businesses are laying off workers, and bad economic news seems to be the order of the day. Your friends and family may be discouraging you from going out on your own right now. What should you do?...

Top Technology Trends For Small Businesses In 2009
by Ramon Ray, founder and editor of Smallbiztechnology.com,
courtesy, Small Business Trends
Every year two things happen in the world of technology overall and especially in the world of small businesses:
1. Technology remains the same (cell phones, computers, web browsers - ho hum)
2. Technology evolves and gets better (think iPhone, Netbooks, Google’s Chrome - match them to the list above)
What this means for your business is that if you want your business to grow through leveraging technology you simply can not continue to rely on the same old technology you have always used...

A Different Search: A Little-Known Search Engines May Revolutionize Your Online Research
by Yank Elliott, MBA & IAHBE Writer
Research is such a large part of my business life, you would think I pay a lot of attention to search engines. Not so. I just automatically use the same ways to search every day. A recent article in Entrepreneur Magazine, New Ways to Search, caused me to see what I may have been missing on the search front. Your Positive Chance For Success: Effective Strategies For Developing A Positive Mindset
by Yank Elliott, MBA & IAHBE Staff Writer
News reports in all the media are always about negative situations—people are more interested in bad news than in the good. This kind of reporting is even worse right now because of all the gloom and doom in the worldwide economy. People toss and turn all night thinking of what terrible things may happen, and they wake up with the most negative attitude toward everything. There certainly are times when people must be concerned to protect their own safety and the wellbeing of their company or some other group of people. To think negatively about everything, however, erects a wall of gloom around anything one tries to do during the whole day. The result is inefficiency, poor decisions, and deteriorating relationships. Success opportunities will be lost, your associates will be disgusted, and you end your day surrounded with feelings of doom, just in time to begin the cycle all over again...

Stimulus Opportunities: Is there an entrepreneurial windfall in your state's federal stimulus program?
by Yank Elliott, MBA & IAHBE Writer
Every catastrophe, economic or otherwise, carries a number of opportunities all around its fringes. You have probably heard the frequently repeated phrase from the White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, and others to the effect that “any crisis is too good an opportunity to waste”—meaning to use it as an excuse for pushing an unpopular idea through Congress. That is just what this article is about, i.e., the President’s economic stimulus program and the opportunities surrounding it. We discuss possible ways to take advantage of this program, as well as how you will need to put significant effort into finding what avenues are open for you to profit from the stimulus...

Opportunities From Troubles
by Yank Elliott, MBY & IAHBE Writer
This is truly a time of new economic thinking. Always in the past, serious depressed periods were allowed to get themselves started by leaving them alone. This did not work well after the 1929 depression, and it is difficult to tell if the ideas of Keynesian economics turned the economy around, or was it the onset of World War II? There is a lot of discussion about this, but the truth is, nobody really knows. In the present serious recession, the government decided to take some actions to slow the decline and reduce unemployment. Obviously, our leaders are very unsure about what to do. Time may show all the stimulus plans finally achieve their objective, or will they? This is a time of serious economic disruption affecting the lives of every person in the entire world. There are vast opportunities around this disruption, however, and entrepreneurs are going to make a lot of money by filling all the gaps that are opening up...

Bring Home Overseas Business: How Home-Based Entrepreneurs Can Begin To Reverse Offshoring
by Yank Elliott, MBY & IAHBE Writer
Being a Newsaholic, various news programs are on my TV and my computer a large part of every day. Most of the news for the past year has been about economic problems facing the entire world. When many social-political ideas are added to this fire, it is inevitable that a great disruption in how everyone does business is bound to result.
A major part of legislation under consideration by the U.S. Congress is concerned with various aspects of our environment. It is likely that more U.S. jobs will relocate abroad in the wake of whatever environmental legislation comes out of Washington. This will be bad for our ailing economy, and there are few easy solutions. If we place trade barriers, we cut our own throats because our economy depends on exports to the very countries where all our jobs are going. It’s a vicious cycle. An answer that could work, with a bit of creativity, will help the environment as well as our home economy. How?..
