GETTING STARTED:

I'm starting a home business next month. I have a maximum of $3,000 in start-up capital. Where should I invest it?
The greatest return will come from a network-marketing or affiliate-marketing business. Obviously, selection is a huge factor that contributes to your chances for success. With a home-based business, one of your biggest expenses is exposure (marketing). So, first find a solid company who has a product or service that you feel comfortable representing, and second, find a solid mentor within that company. I can't emphasis enough the importance of company selection and upline support. This mentor will be able to guide you with budgeting your marketing resources.

I've just started a home business. My spouse has given me six months to make it work. Any advice?
Yes, Find an assocate in your business who experienced the same challenge and has found success. Get your spouse on a conference call with that couple. The more your spouse understands about your business, the more support you will get.

They say it takes money to make money. Should I try to get a small business loan for my start-up capital or just try to get by with my own limited finances?
The reason that I am such an advocate of network marketing is because you can experience incredible returns with little money invested. However, it is important to add that there is no substitute for hard work. Sure, you can work smarter, but nonetheless, there is plenty to do when getting started. Startup capital need not be more than enough to cover your personal product or service purchases for at least four to six months and marketing tools, such as literature, audio tapes, CDs, and videos. If you are going to actively use the Internet, you may require autoresponders and quality leads. Seldom do these costs require a small-business loan.

TECHNOLOGY & TOOLS:

How quickly do you adopt new technology for your business?
Not nearly as fast as I used to. Network marketing is a people business and, too often, people forget this. Talking to people does not require much in the way of technology. It is easy to get caught up in using new tools rather than focusing on what really grows your business: talking to new people.

Do you use a fax machine with a dedicated line?
Seldom do I fax anything. I try to e-mail a scanned copy whenever an fax is requested. If I must receive a fax, I use the free service from http://www.efax.com.

How do you use e-mail in your business?
This is the tool that I use more than any other. If you intend to use the Internet for business, I highly suggest securing your own domain name so that you can have multiple e-mail addresses: admin@ info@ mail@ support@ news@ ect.

How do you utilize the Internet?
Marketing, education, research, communication, prospecting, training...you name it.

How many of your own Website(s) do you have? What do you use your Website(s) for?
http://www.jpjameson.com is used to share information about myself while exposing people to both the Brilliant Compensation video and What The Wealthy Buy On Payday video; http://jessejameson.com has a brief bio about me and my business opportunity.

Do you use auto-responders? How do you use this tool in your business?
Yes, I use them for all types of marketing, including new customers and new business-opportunity seekers.

If you use a toll-free number, what is its primary use?
I use it for credibility when marketing. While you can make a long-distance call today for pennies, there is still a mindset that suggests that an 800 number is more creditable.

If you use voice mail, what is your primary use for it?
Voice mail is a must. Don't even try to be in business without it, or you will lose a ton.

Describe your computer system and how you use computers in your business.
I love technology, so for me it is a constant struggle between what is really needed for business and what is fun to play with. I have a desktop Pentium III. I also have a scanner, laser printer, and a P4 laptop. Both my desktop and my laptop are connected to a wireless broadband router. I have a digital camera, but I seldom use it for business unless I am at an event.

What software do you consider in the "must-have" category?
MS Office 2003. I use Outlook, Word, Excel, FrontPage, PhotoShop, and AOL Instant Messenger.

What other technology do you use in your business?
A cell phone is a must. In fact, I use a cell phone exclusively. Also, I use Yahoo! Message Groups to keep my team informed.

Name up to five personal favorite business URL's our readers can benefit from:

Of all the technology you use, rank the top three.

  • Cell Phone—Talking to new people builds your business. A cell phone allows you to do it from anywhere.
  • Laptop—Access the Internet and e-mail from anywhere.
  • Streaming media to tell your story online.

MARKETING & ADVERTISING:

How do you market on the Internet?
Autoresponders, sponsored search engine listings, relevancy search engine listings, business-opportunity Websites.

Approximately what percent of your sales originate from Internet marketing?
90%.

How do you market through direct mail?
Not at all, though this may change in the future.

Approximately what percent of your sales originate from direct mail marketing?
None, but this may change to 5-10%.

How do you market in the print media?
Currently testing newspapers and magazines.

How do you market via broadcast advertising?
Not at this time, though this may also change in the future.

Approximately what percent of your sales originate from broadcast advertising?
Exploring radio in the very near future.

What other kinds of marketing do you utilize?
Internet, warm market with literature and tapes, CDs, and videos.

Do you recommend using a toll-free number in advertising?
Yes, it lends credibility.

Where do you market? (locally, nationally, internationally, all three?)
All three.

THE HOME OFFICE:

How should someone set up his/her home office to maximize its effectiveness?
Make certain you can work without being disturbed. Try and set a schedule for being in your office just as if you went to work. I highly recommend that you create a dream board, and put it on the wall in front of your desk. If you would like details on how to make a dream board, feel free to e-mail me.

What, if any, ground rules have you established for yourself and family in order to operate a successful home business?
Sit down with your family, and let them know that you need their support in recognizing that when you are in your office, you are at work and you need to treat it that way. On that same note, be sure not to live in your office. Balance is important, and time with your family will help to keep the peace.

What are some of the advantages to working at home? What are some of the disadvantages?
Why do they call it rush hour when nothing is moving? I do not miss the commute at all. Sometimes when I happen to be going somewhere during morning or evening traffic, I smile because I know that I no longer have to. For those that still do, make it your mobile library. Turn off the radio and start a collection of personal development audios. The disadvantages to working at home can be working too many hours because your work is right there. This can lead to burnout. Also, it can get quite lonely if you do not get out enough. I have made a habit recently of taking my laptop to Starbucks and utilizing their wireless Internet.

MANAGEMENT STYLE:

What part(s) of your work do you farm out?
With my lead business, I farm out administrative work. With my networking business, it is a team effort so there is not much to farm out.

What part(s) do you feel should never be farmed out?
Personal contact with your customers and distributors.

Do you encourage or discourage partnerships?
Hmmm...careful of partnerships with friends and family. Partnerships can be taxing on the relationship. It takes a certain type of chemistry for a partnership to work. Often the best partners are found in business associates. This gives you a mutual foundation of respect and demonstrated work ethic.

Do you encourage or discourage hiring family members?
Hiring, yes. If you must do it…spell out their duties in very clear terms. However, with network marketing, it works well because they work with you but not for you.

When legal issues arise, what's your usual response?
In network marketing, there are not too many areas that you can run into legal challenges, except perhaps making false claims or cross recruiting, and in most cases, your distributorship runs the risk of being dismissed by the company that you represent.

MONEY & INVESTMENTS:

What are the advantages of earning a lot of money. What are some disadvantages?
The advantages of earning lots of money is that you now have the resources to explore your dreams. The disadvantages are that if you did not grow personally in the process, the money is only temporary. Seldom will a person's income exceed that of their personal growth. It is not about the riches you may amass; it is about the person that you become in the process. It is easy to tell when a person has grown in the process because they could lose it all and have it back again quickly; they have come to understand that making money is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics.

Best general tax advice?
The best tax mind in the country is Sandy Botkin. He is a former IRS tax attorney in charge of training tax attorneys. His tax Website is http://www.destinymax.com/tax.

Best general investment advice?
Diversify! Everyone should own real estate. Have investment buckets. Designate a portion of your income to go in to the growth bucket and a portion to go into your security bucket. "Growth" can be the stock market with mild to moderate risk, and "security" could be conservative mutual funds, CDs, and such.

You're in business already, and you've just received a windfall of $20,000. What would you do with it?
Assess what areas of your business could use the funds to grow. Marketing is an area that can cause your business to grow in direct proportion to your investment, if you have already identified certain marketing campaigns with an actual cost-per-new-customer acquisition.

NETWORK MARKETING SPECIFICS:

What do you lead with—your company's products or the business opportunity?
It depends on who I am talking to. I market to both consumers and business-opportunity seekers. I have found that leading with the product can build a solid business and results in less attrition. When you lead with the opportunity, and they later have a change of heart about the business, they are less likely to continue purchasing product for their own personal use. When you lead with the product, you tend to develop some long-term customers. Many of these customers will want to share the products with other people and will begin a business. Even if they decide that the business is not for them, they will continue to use the products.

Rank the following traits in order of their importance in building a successful network marketing business: enthusiasm, persistence, knowledge, and communication skills.
The No. 1 factor is desire! Enthusiasm fades or, at best, must be maintained. Persistance will get you through slumps, which is a predictable part of the business. Knowledge gives you the advantage of credibility, and communication is the skill that helps you to develop rapport. So to put them in order, I would say:

  1. Desire
  2. Persistance
  3. Enthusiasm (maintained by regulary reviewing your "WHY"—your goals and dreams)
  4. Communication Skills
  5. Knowledge

How long were you in business for yourself before you saw your first four-figure commission check?
Six months to see my first four figure check.

What's more important, the initial contact with a prospect or the follow up?
Both are equally important. Establishing rapport is critical for gaining both trust and interest. The trust comes by finding some common ground. The interest comes from asking enough questions to first determine what is important to them (their needs) and then sharing with them the elements of your product or opportunity that would meet their needs. Follow up is a key part of the business. In fact, some say that it is all in the follow up. I personally believe that it depends on the foundation that you laid with the initial contact. Also, never underestimate the power of third-party validation. If you have someone who you would say their level of interest could be rated as a seven or better on a scale from 1 to 10, get them on a three-way call with your upline support.

You've just recruited a promising new distributor. How do you help him/her get off to a good start...or do you consider that the new distributor's responsibility?
A good start is your responsibility as a sponsor. You should have some form of goal worksheet for them to fill out so that you are both clear on their goals for this business. You want to know their "why," as it is the "why" that will get them through the slumps...because the slumps will come. It is a natural and predictable part of the business. Help them set realistic expectations, and be sure to introduce them to as many upline support people as makes sense.

How do you get your best leads?
The best leads ever come from your warm market. As the owner of a lead company, http://www.falconleads.com, I can tell you first hand that as you get better, any leads you work will get better. There are many sources of leads on the Internet. Make certain that your provider time and date stamps them for validity and that they have not been sold to too many other people. Regardless, a skilled communicator can take the worst list and find quality people. The No. 1 reason that people join your business is NOT because of the company, the product, or the compensation plan. It is because they like their sponsor.

I'm planning a big local meeting; what's the best way to fill the room?
Adequate time to plan the event, knowing that you are going to have to invite at least three times the number of people that you expect to show up.

I need to generate 100 leads within 60 days; what's my best strategy to achieve this?
Buy them from a quality supplier.

How many distributors must a person recruit each month to succeed in network marketing?
If you are serious about your business, you should at least be sponsoring three. My best month was 65.

Best tips for surviving rejection?
You must learn to embrace it. They are not rejecting you; they are rejecting the message, and you are simply the messenger. Get to know your ratios. If you know that you need to talk to 10, 20, or even 30 people to get a yes (and as you get better these numbers will improve) you know that every "no" brings you that much closer to a new distributor.

Do you recommend that new distributors prospect close friends and family?
Yes, but not alone. I believe that each time you contact your warm market, you should have your upline with you. You simply make the introduction and let your sponsor do the presenting.

THE ROAD AHEAD:

In five years I'll be...
Supporting my network marketing dynasty while continuing to contribute as a personal development life coach.

In 10 years I'll be...
Continuing to travel the world, visiting new and exciting places while teaching personal development and being a motivational speaker.

POWERFUL IDEAS:

What was the motivating factor that drove you to start your own business?
Time and financial freedom.

What role, if any, did your family play when you were getting your business off the ground?
None! I actually had to make some temporary sacrifices to follow my dreams, as many of us often have to do. What will you sacrifice today in order to prosper in the years to come?

What motivates you now to continue building your business?
Helping others find their own time and financial freedom. Is there a greater reward than the gift of giving? What you give you get to keep! What you fail to give, you lose forever.

What's the best thing about being self-employed?
Control of your destiny and the power to design your life. Wages make you a living. Profits make you a fortune. —Jim Rohn

How often do you read books and/or listen to or watch tapes for improving your business skills or knowledge?
Daily!!! Repetition is the mother of all skill. Your life is a mirror of your most consistent thoughts! The more good content that goes into your mind, the better results you will produce in all areas of your life.

The most underrated activity in business is…
Acknowledging those you work with.

The most overrated activity in business is…
Busy work that is non productive (analysis paralysis)

What was the biggest obstacle you had to face when you were launching your own business?
Faith in the process.

What's your biggest obstacle now?
Continuing to practice the fundamentals.

If you had to start your business all over again, what would you do differently?
I would not try to reinvent the wheel. Find those who are getting the results that you are after and get to know them well. Learn all you can from them and adopt their practices.

What was your worst business decision?
The use of online fear-of-loss systems for building a network-marketing business...they end up being a revolving door.

What was your best business decision?
To adopt a healthy mix of lead with product and opportunity.

What do you consider to be the main keys of your success?
Consistency in practicing the fundamentals.

What's your success philosophy?
When you come from a place of truly trying to help others get what they want, the universe opens up to give you what you want.

What about you has changed the most since finding success in business?
I continue to grow as a person. Financial success is simply a byproduct of your own personal growth.

What is the legacy you hope to leave?
As a student of all things possible, I want to be able to share with others what I have learned and to somehow impact their lives for the better.
